Whipps Cross are searching for an experienced Trust Grade (ST3+) to join their highly skilled team.

Whipps Cross is a district general hospital that is located on the edge of Epping Forest, in between Walthamstow Central, Leytonstone and Snaresbrook stations.

First opening over a hundred years ago, our team at Whipps Cross have one of the busiest A&E departments in the country with more than 152,000 patients attending each year. Other departments are just as busy with over 77,000 inpatient stays and 381,000 outpatient appointments.

The team at Whipps Cross work with people from a diverse range of backgrounds and no two days are the same. We have developed a strong reputation as a centre of excellence for various specialist services such as urology, ENT, audiology, cardiology, colorectal surgery, cancer care and acute stroke care.

Job Purpose:

The post holder will have a good general medical background with experience in UK Emergency Medicine and the ability to diagnose, treat and appropriately dispose of patients presenting as an emergency. The following competencies comprise a list the majority of which the post holder would have achieved in previous posts before being appointed. Those not achieved at the time of appointment should be acquired under the supervision of the Consultants in Emergency Medicine:

Anterior Nasal Pack, BIPAP, CPAP, Cauterization (Littles’ Area), Chest Drain, Reduction of Dislocated joints, External Pacing ,Femoral Venous Line Insertion, Reduction of Fractures, Haematoma Block, Intra Venous Sedation, Intraosseous Needle Insertion, Intubation of a cardiac arrest patient, Jugular Venous Line Insertion, Knee Aspiration, Log Roll, Nail Bed Repair, Nail Removal, Nail Trephine, Pleural Aspiration, Reduction Pulled Elbow, Ring Block, Ultrasound Identification (Jugular vein), Subacromial Injection, Suprapubic Catheter Insertion, Pharmacological control of an agitated patient (as per NICE guidelines), PCI Initiation of Care Pathway.

The duties of the post are subject to review from time to time in the light of changing requirements of the service. The post holder may be asked to perform exceptional irregular commitments outside of normal rostered duties as are essential to maintain the emergency medical service.

The Emergency Department at Whipps Cross University Hospital will give the appointee the unique opportunity to gain exposure and clinical management skills in pathologies which reflect the diverse local population. Consultant onsite presence for 14 hours. 7 days a week, provides the trainee, opportunities to expand and learn and diversify their clinical skills portfolio. Ultrasound is widely used, and procedural sedation is also practiced.

The department offers a dedicated, ring fenced two hours a week middle grade teaching programme which is mapped to the College of Emergency Medicine higher training curriculum.

Clinical and educational supervision will be provided as will portfolio development. We are keen to develop our registers into the Consultants of tomorrow.

Study leave will be encouraged and supported. We have a number of in-house courses spanning trauma training, safe sedation, medical simulation as well as the nationally recognised ATLS, ALS, and APLS courses which are run within the trust.

We have a dedicated Emergency Department Clinical Decisions unit which gives the appointee the opportunity to expand their clinical skills into patients care pathways which are suitable for those patients who require greater than a four hour stay in the Emergency Department.

We practice regular mortality and morbidity meetings as well as governance meetings. This will give the appointees the opportunity to engage in self-reflection and to disseminate learning from interesting cases. We aim to learn and support each other.

Requirements:

  • MB ChB or equivalent
  • Full GMC Registration
  • Full MRCEM or equivalent
  • Medical knowledge commensurate with grade
  • 3 years relevant hospital experience at SHO level or above of which at least 12 MONTHS in Emergency Medicine
  • Understanding of ALS/ATLS/APLS principles
  • Good communication skills both written and verbal
  • Able to work within a multidisciplinary team
  • Commitment to quality care
  • Ability to organize ones CPD
  • Enthusiasm in teaching junior doctors, medical students and nurses
  • Involvement in clinical audit
  • The post holder will be required to work shifts and flexible hours including overnight shifts
